If you’re considering working with me, you might be wondering whether to book a paid session or collaborate on a trade-for-portfolio (TFP) shoot. Here’s how to decide.
What TFP is (and isn’t)
TFP sessions are creative collaborations where we both benefit: you get professional photos at no cost, I get portfolio work. They’re designed around concepts I’m actively building in my portfolio—specific themes, aesthetics, or creative directions I want to explore.
What makes TFP different:
- No payment required from you. Instead, you’re providing your time, collaboration, and agreement to let me use the images for my portfolio.
- The concept comes first. We’re shooting something specific that serves my portfolio needs. We’ll still tailor the concept to you and will ensure that you’re happy with the plan before shooting.
- You provide more. You’re responsible for your hair and makeup and an indoor location, if applicable.
- Images are used for my portfolio. Your photos may appear on my website, social media, and various photography portfolio and networking sites. We’ll discuss and agree on any censoring or anonymizing before the shoot.
- I choose what gets used publicly. You’ll receive the same edited images I use, but I select which ones to edit based on quality, variety and portfolio value.

Why TFP might be perfect for you
The return value is significant. You’re getting 20+ professionally edited images (compared to 5-12 in paid packages), the same shooting time and expertise, and the same image quality—all at no cost. For many people, this is the difference between having professional photos and not having them at all.
Choose TFP if:
- One of my available concepts genuinely excites you and matches what you want.
- Budget is a major barrier to getting professional photography.
- You have access to a good location (your home, outdoor space, or a friend’s place).
- You’re comfortable with your images being used publicly for my portfolio (with agreed-upon censoring/anonymizing if needed).
- You enjoy the creative collaboration aspect, working together on something we’re both invested in.
- You’re open to artistic direction and trying something potentially outside your comfort zone.
If one of my concepts speaks to you and you’re comfortable with portfolio usage, TFP gives you access to professional photography that might otherwise be out of reach.

When a paid session is the better choice
Choose a paid session if:
- You want the session fully customized to your preferences, comfort level, and goals.
- You want a more traditional client experience with personalized service.
- You prefer to select which images are edited and used.
- You want fewer, more carefully curated images rather than a larger collection.
- You need more control over where and how your images appear publicly.
Paid sessions offer more control, more support, and complete customization. You’re paying for convenience, personalization, and a white-glove experience.
The quality is the same
Whether you book TFP or pay for a session, you’re getting the same photographer, same equipment, same editing quality, and the same level of professionalism. I’m always committed to creating an experience and a result that is unique and rewarding for all involved.

Still unsure?
Browse my available TFP concepts to see if anything resonates. If you love one of the concepts and the terms work for you, TFP could give you professional photos you might not otherwise be able to afford. If you have your own vision or need more comprehensive service, a paid session is the better investment.
Either way, I’m here to create something beautiful with you.
